The Isle of Palms Police Department (IOPPD) is preparing for a review of the department to maintain its advanced accreditation among law enforcement agencies.
This month, a member from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) will review the department operations to determine if the agency should be reaccredited for four more years.
IOPPD was first accredited by CALEA, an international commission, in 2002 and has maintained its advanced accreditation. About 5% of law enforcement agencies in the United States are accredited by CALEA. CALEA is considered the gold standard in public safety and has been accrediting law enforcement agencies since 1979.
The on-site assessment, which begins on Monday, November 18, 2024, and runs through Thursday, November 20, 2024, has many components. One part of the process involves the public. The assessor invites comments from the community and employees. To accomplish that, the police department will conduct a call-in session for the public on Monday, November 18, 2024, between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at (843) 981-9222. The public can also submit comments online at www.iop.net/police/calea-
The telephone call-in comment period is limited to 10 minutes and must address the department’s ability to comply with CALEA standards. A copy of the standards is available on the IOPPD website. Corporal Amanda Postell, is the Isle of Palms Police Department’s accreditation manager and local contact. She may be reached at (843) 886-6522 or apostell@iop.net.
