Maybe it’s a midlife crisis. Or maybe turning 50 just makes you finally start doing the things you’ve always wanted to do. For me, that meant buying scooters from Port City Moped. One hot pink, the other Tiffany blue, lovingly referred to now as “Pinky” and “Tiff.”
I have been wanting to own a scooter for years, so for my 50th birthday, my husband surprised me! Luckily, we didn’t have to go very far to find them. We bought two scooters right here on IOP from Port City Moped, located on Palm Boulevard. There’s something I really love about being able to make a purchase like this from a local, family-owned business, especially when the whole reason I wanted scooters was to enjoy island life a little differently.
Port City doesn’t just sell scooters. They rent them, along with golf carts, which makes it a fun option for visitors who want to experience the island without spending the entire time in a car. They also service and repair scooters, so thankfully, we know exactly where we’ll be taking Pinky and Tiff when they need a little TLC.
I have to give a special shoutout to Jordan, the owner, who was incredibly helpful throughout the whole process. He and his wife recently welcomed a new baby, and even with everything going on in their world, he still took so much time with us, answering questions, making sure everything was perfect and genuinely making the experience feel personal and easy. That meant a lot.
But what I didn’t expect when we bought them was how quickly these scooters would become a family affair. Most nights after dinner, we take a little joy ride. There’s usually no destination. We just hop on and ride around the island for a while. And in the short time we’ve had them, it’s already become something the whole family looks forward to.
There’s something about seeing the island from a scooter that feels completely different from seeing it through a car window. You notice the houses you’ve driven past a hundred times, neighbors out walking their dogs, families on bikes and golf carts, and that evening sky that makes you remember how lucky we are to call this place home.
Maybe that’s one of the things I’m learning as I turn 50: Fun doesn’t always have to have a purpose. Sometimes you can do something simply because you’ve always wanted to.
So, are two scooters for my 50th birthday technically a midlife crisis? Perhaps. But if my version of a midlife crisis is supporting a local island business and taking after-dinner joy rides with my family, I’d say I’m doing 50 just right so far!
