The Friends of Charleston National Parks and Battery Gadsden Cultural Center held their annual spring concert, A Prelude to the Revolution… A Soulful Celebration, on May 19 inside historic Fort Moultrie, where music, history and community came together at one of the nation’s most significant Revolutionary War sites.
The featured performer was two-time Grammy Award winner and Charleston native Charlton Singleton, joined by a group of musicians performing classics from legendary artists including James Brown, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Wilson Pickett and Al Green.
“More than 250 guests enjoyed an amazing evening in the park,” said Cheri Yates, executive director of Friends of Charleston National Parks. “Programs like this highlight the many ways our national parks serve the community. Our parks are not only places of preservation and education, but also gathering spaces for cultural experiences, music and shared connections to history.
“The concert serves as a lead-up to the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Sullivan’s Island, which officially kicks off at Fort Moultrie on June 27, with the formal commemoration taking place June 28,” she said.
The event celebrated the enduring legacy of soul music and the growing excitement surrounding the upcoming 250th anniversary observances at Fort Moultrie.
