As winter has officially begun and an unusually cold weather system will begin moving into our state. The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control would like to provide some key safety tips and resources for you.
At this time, the system is not expected to bring significant snow or ice, but it will bring high winds and very cold temperatures that may cause a variety of safety hazards.
• Review tips from the Red Cross to prevent frozen pipes. The Red Cross has additional information on preparing for a Winter Storm such as emergency kits, protecting pets and protecting your home and family.
• HealthChildren.org provides information to keep children safe in the cold, such as protecting them from frostbite and hypothermia.
• The Farmer’s Almanac has 11 safety tips including a reminder to be a good neighbor and check in with elderly or disabled relatives and neighbors to ensure they are safe.
• The Cleveland Clinic provides an article on how cold weather can spell trouble for our hearts and lungs. This could be important as our bodies are not accustomed to the temperatures we are about to experience.
These weather conditions can cause frozen pipes, power outages, increased risk for house fires, carbon monoxide poisoning and cold stress on the body – increasing risks for heart attack.
