Born at Camp LeJeune, N.C., Susan Colwell was raised in Toledo, Ohio. As a youngster she was enrolled in classes at the Toledo Museum of Art, and as a teenager she had her first solo exhibition at a Toledo art gallery. After moving to Zurich, Switzerland with her family, her love of art became an obsession. She was exposed to the Great Masters as she and her family traveled throughout Europe. She earned her BFA in painting and graphic art from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Colwell worked in social work and as an artist for advertising agencies in Ohio, California and New York. Years ago, she moved to Charleston, the home of her great-grandparents. Living in Charleston brought back beautiful childhood memories of crabbing, pluff mud, and grandma’s fried chicken. Colwell stated, “The Lowcountry is a continual source of inspiration because I am moved by the everchanging light and softness I feel in the atmosphere.” She has been represented by galleries in South and North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Virginia. She is currently represented by the Meyer-Vogl gallery in Charleston.
Colwell is collected all over the world and is a member of the American Impressionism Society and American Women Artist. She will demonstrate her impressionistic style on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 1:30 p.m., at The Lake House in the Live Oak Room.
